AI-92, AI-95 and AI-98: choosing the right petrol

The numbers 92, 95 and 98 describe research-octane resistance to engine knock. They do not rate the cleanliness of the fuel, the quality of a particular station or guaranteed fuel savings.

What octane actually means

Octane describes a fuel’s resistance to abnormal combustion under compression. Engines have different compression ratios, turbocharging and ignition controls, so their fuel requirements differ.

Putting AI-98 into an engine designed for AI-92 will not automatically improve fuel economy. Some engines can take advantage of higher-octane petrol, but only under suitable operating conditions.

Choose the grade specified for your engine

Check the vehicle owner’s manual and the fuel filler label. The minimum approved grade can depend on engine version, model year and market. “Recommended” and “required” do not necessarily mean the same thing.

If a grade is explicitly required, do not substitute lower-octane fuel just to save money. Where more than one grade is permitted, compare actual prices and consumption instead of assuming the most expensive is best.

Compare fuel costs fairly

For example, at illustrative prices of 255 KZT per litre for AI-92 and 315 KZT for AI-95, the difference over 40 litres is 2,400 KZT. This comparison only matters if the manufacturer allows both grades.

Compare the same volume and date, account for discounts, and check the actual pump before paying. A city-level network snapshot on Benza KZ is not a confirmed price at an individual station.

Before you fill up

Check the label on the dispenser, environmental grade and displayed total price. Keep your receipt. When unsure about compatibility, use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than generic online advice.

This material is general information. Always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s requirements and the information at the fuel station.
